It doesn’t come as a surprise that chocolate is a very popular flavor. Is there anyone who DOESN’T like chocolate? Probably, but I am sure they are pretty lonely!
We all have our favorite chocolate brands and protein powder is no different. Some are over sweetened, while others taste of nothing. Getting a creamy chocolate protein powder is not something every brand gets right but there are enough who do to send you to chocolate heaven.
Do You Need A Protein Powder?
No, of course not, The reality is you can get your protein from food and it is very easy to get the daily recommended amount. However, sometimes what you really want to do after a tough workout is drink something.
For me, a nice cool shake is much more appealing straight afterwards than going straight for food. In fact it helps me feel ok to eat, so I will then end up eating a little.
A protein shake allows me to get calories in straight after a workout and thus time to prepare some food as well.
There are lots of different options when it comes to protein – you can either have standard whey (which usually works best for a creamy chocolate flavor) or you can go plant based which can take a bit more tweaking.
Just because it is plant based though, doesn’t mean it won’t taste great – in fact one of my fave chocolate shakes IS plant based (check out my list below).
How to Choose a Chocolate Protein Powder
Well if we are going by flavor alone, the first thing you NEED to figure out is which ones are GOOD. Read reviews, get opinions – see which Brands really nail a good chocolate protein shake. Some of them really SUCK and you don’t want to be buying one of those.
Of course this type of thing comes down to preference in the end, but there are tell tale signs when a shake just isn’t living up to expectations. Plant based proteins tend to get a reptuation for not tasting as great, but if you look enough you will find something that works. I have tasted some terrible shakes over the years to get to some beauties!
Besides making sure its super chocolatey and gorgeous, there are other things you should try to factor in too – depending on how much you care about keeping it as healthy as possible.
How Much Sugar?
A great tasting chocolate protein shake doesn’t have to have loads of sugar in to be great. It really doesn’t! It is not all about the sugar.
Some sugar is ok but tons is definitely not if you care about your health. So opt for low sugar or zero sugar. Low sugar however is better than getting one with laden with artificial sweeteners. They have their own issues – some of them leave really bad after taste, while others are just bad for your health.
Protein
What’s the point of a protein shake if it doesn’t have any protein in it?
Make sure you are getting at least 20gs. You could get a little lower but I would really opt for 20-25g if it doesn’t offer anything additional.
Quality
To ensure you are getting a quality product look for those that have been made in a GMP facility. This is usually a good sign of quality. Also look for Brands that are transparent about the ingredients in their shakes – if you can’t work out what is in it, it is probably best to avoid.
